Championship Overview

The 2009 NOVAR Verizon Cup Series Season, was the 46th season in Cup series competition, and the 1st under the Verizon Cup banner. Michael Scott was the defending champion. Scott nearly became the first driver since Shane Clarke II to win 2 titles in a row, however, he slid off track on lap 4 at the Decatur giving Mark Mongillo his first title by 221 points (the third most lopsided championship in NOVAR history after 1994, and 2003). Mongillo also became the first rookie to win the championship in NOVAR history.
